Wisdom teeth & extractions

Sometimes a tooth has to come out — a wisdom tooth with no room, or a tooth too broken to save. We do it gently, plan it from a 3D scan where needed, and tell you honestly when a tooth can be kept instead.

Opened pod — a clean release; letting go of what causes trouble.

Two kinds of removal

Whether it’s a troublesome wisdom tooth or a tooth beyond repair, the priority is the same: get it out safely and comfortably, with the site planned properly first.

Wisdom teeth

The last teeth to come through often have no room, coming in at an angle or getting stuck (impacted). When they cause pain, infection or crowding, removing them is the fix.

General extractions

A tooth too broken down or decayed to save, or one removed to relieve crowding, is taken out gently under local anaesthetic.

We’d rather keep a tooth: extraction is a last resort where a tooth can be saved. And where a case is genuinely complex or better suited to a specialist, we’ll refer you rather than push beyond what we should do.

When a tooth may need to come out

Extraction is the right call in specific situations. It’s worth being assessed if you have:

An impacted or painful wisdom tooth

A wisdom tooth that’s stuck, repeatedly infected, or pushing on its neighbour usually needs to come out.

A tooth too broken to save

When decay or damage is beyond a filling, crown or root canal, removing the tooth relieves the problem — and we’ll discuss replacing it.

Crowding before orthodontics

Occasionally a tooth is removed to make room as part of a wider orthodontic plan.

We plan wisdom teeth and trickier extractions from a 3D CBCT scan, so we can see the roots and nearby nerves before we start — not guess at them.

What to expect

Most extractions are done in a single visit under local anaesthetic, with clear aftercare to take home.

  1. 1Step one

    Assess & scan

We check the tooth with an X-ray or 3D scan to plan the safest approach, and talk you through what to expect.

  2. 2Step two

    Numb the area

The tooth and surrounding area are thoroughly numbed — you shouldn’t feel pain, just some pressure.

  3. 3Step three

    Remove it gently

The tooth is eased out carefully. We’ll offer options to help you stay relaxed if you’re anxious.

  4. 4Step four

    Aftercare

You leave with clear instructions for the next few days; the socket heals over the following weeks.

What it costs

Extractions are priced by how straightforward the tooth is — a simple removal differs from an impacted wisdom tooth — and you’ll have the cost in writing after the assessment. Health funds contribute and we claim on the spot.

Health fund rebates

All major Australian funds accepted and claimed on the spot through HICAPS — you settle only the gap.

Interest-free options

Larger treatment can be spread over time rather than paid upfront — just ask.

No surprise additions

Your quote covers the plan agreed. If something changes clinically, we discuss it before it affects the cost.

Questions

Wisdom Teeth & Extractions FAQs

Does having a tooth out hurt?

The area is thoroughly numbed, so during the extraction you feel pressure but not pain. Afterwards there’s usually some soreness for a few days, which over-the-counter pain relief manages well, and we give you clear aftercare to keep it comfortable.

Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?

No — wisdom teeth that come through cleanly and cause no trouble can be left alone. Removal is for the ones that are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or crowding other teeth. We’ll assess yours honestly rather than remove them by default.

How long does recovery take?

Most people are back to normal within a few days for a simple extraction; an impacted wisdom tooth can take a little longer. Following the aftercare — rest, no smoking, and gentle care of the area — helps it heal smoothly.

What is dry socket and how do I avoid it?

Dry socket is a delayed healing of the socket that can be painful; it’s more likely with smoking or disturbing the area too soon. The aftercare we give you is designed to avoid it, and if it happens we can treat it quickly — so call us rather than sit with the pain.

Can I be sedated for a difficult extraction?

If you’re anxious, we’ll talk through options to help you stay calm and comfortable, and take things at your pace. For complex surgical cases better suited to a specialist or sedation we don’t provide, we’ll refer you to the right person.
