Tooth-coloured fillings
When decay does get in, a tooth-coloured filling repairs it discreetly — bonded to the tooth and matched to its shade, so the repair doesn’t announce itself every time you smile.

River stone — smooth and natural-toned; a gap quietly filled.
A repair that blends in
Modern fillings are tooth-coloured composite, bonded directly to the tooth rather than wedged in like the old silver ones. They look natural and preserve more of your own tooth.
Matched to your tooth
The composite is shaded to your own enamel and built up in layers, so a filling on a visible tooth doesn’t show.
Replacing old silver fillings
Old amalgam fillings can be swapped for tooth-coloured ones — often worth doing when they’re worn, leaking or you’d simply rather they didn’t show.
Honest first: if a tooth is too broken down for a filling to last, we’ll tell you a crown is the better bet rather than patching it twice.
When a filling is the answer
Fillings handle the everyday repairs that keep a tooth going. It’s worth being seen if you notice any of these:
A new cavity
Decay caught early is a small, quick filling — left longer it grows towards the nerve and a bigger job.
A chipped or worn tooth
Small chips and worn edges can often be rebuilt with bonded composite in a single visit.
Old fillings showing their age
Worn, stained or leaking old fillings can be replaced before they let decay back in underneath.
A filling only lasts if what’s underneath is sound — part of the visit is checking there’s no bigger problem hiding beneath an old repair.
What to expect
Most fillings are a single, straightforward appointment.
- 1Step one
Numb if needed
The tooth is numbed for comfort — very small fillings sometimes need nothing at all.
- 2Step two
Remove the decay
We clean out the decay and prepare the tooth, keeping as much healthy tooth as possible.
- 3Step three
Build it up
Tooth-coloured composite is bonded in and built up in layers to rebuild the tooth’s shape.
- 4Step four
Shape & polish
We shape it to your bite and polish it so it feels and looks like your own tooth.
What it costs
Fillings are priced by size and the tooth involved, and they’re on the price list. Most health funds cover them well, we claim on the spot, and eligible children can be bulk-billed under CDBS.
Health fund rebates
All major Australian funds accepted and claimed on the spot through HICAPS — you settle only the gap.
Interest-free options
Larger treatment can be spread over time rather than paid upfront — just ask.
No surprise additions
Your quote covers the plan agreed. If something changes clinically, we discuss it before it affects the cost.

Questions
Tooth-Coloured Fillings FAQs
Do white fillings last as long as silver ones?
For most everyday fillings, yes — modern composites are strong and bond directly to the tooth. Very large fillings on heavily-loaded back teeth are the exception, where a crown sometimes lasts better; we’ll give you an honest recommendation for your tooth.
Does getting a filling hurt?
The tooth is numbed, so the appointment itself is comfortable, and small fillings sometimes need no anaesthetic at all. There can be mild sensitivity for a day or two afterwards, which settles.
Can I replace my old silver fillings with white ones?
Yes — old amalgam fillings can be swapped for tooth-coloured composite, which many people prefer for appearance. It’s especially worth it when the old filling is worn, cracked or leaking; we’ll advise whether replacing is warranted or best left alone.
Will the filling match my tooth?
We shade the composite to your own enamel and build it in layers, so a well-placed filling blends in. On front teeth in particular, matching the shade is part of the job.
Are fillings covered by my health fund?
Fillings are among the best-covered items on most extras policies, and we claim on the spot through HICAPS so you settle only any gap. Eligible children can be bulk-billed under Medicare’s CDBS.
