Emergency dentist in Truganina
Dental pain has a way of arriving at the worst possible time. If a tooth has broken, been knocked out, or is keeping you awake, call us — we keep time aside each day for emergencies and will see you the same day wherever we can.

Bottlebrush — vivid and immediate; seen to, right away.
In pain right now? Call us first
A phone call is faster than a form when it’s urgent — it lets us keep a slot for you and tell you what to do in the meantime. If you can’t get through straight away, leave a message and we’ll call you back as quickly as we can.
Same-day wherever possible
We hold emergency time in the book each day so you’re not left waiting on a painful tooth for a week.
Our hours
Mon–Fri 9:00am – 6:00pm, Sat 9:00am – 4:00pm, Sun Closed. Call and we’ll fit you in.
A price before we start
We settle the pain first, then explain what’s needed and what it costs — you decide before any treatment begins.
If this is a medical emergency, don’t wait for us. Facial swelling that is spreading to your eye or neck, that is making it hard to breathe or swallow, or heavy bleeding or injury after an accident, needs a hospital — call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department.
What counts as a dental emergency?
Some of these need us within the hour, others within a day or two — but all are worth a phone call so we can judge it with you. If you’re unsure, ring and ask; we’d rather talk it through than have you sit on something that worsens overnight.
Severe or throbbing toothache
See us the same day. Constant or throbbing pain — especially if it wakes you at night, worsens when you lie down, or comes with a fever, a bad taste or a gum pimple — usually means the nerve is inflamed or infected, and it rarely settles on its own. Over-the-counter pain relief and a cold compress (never heat) help until we see you.
A knocked-out adult tooth
Call now — the first hour counts. A fully knocked-out adult tooth can sometimes be re-implanted, but the chance drops sharply after 30–60 minutes out of the socket. Handle it by the crown, keep it moist in milk, and come straight in (full steps below). A knocked-out baby tooth is never put back — but still call us.
A broken, chipped or cracked tooth
Same day if it’s painful or sharp. A large break, sensitivity to cold or air, or a jagged edge cutting your tongue needs prompt care. A cracked tooth that hurts when you bite can worsen quickly. A small, painless chip isn’t an emergency but is worth booking before it does. Keep any fragment and bring it with you.
A lost filling or crown
See us within a day or two. The exposed tooth is often sharp and sensitive to hot, cold and sweet, and is easily damaged further while uncovered. Keep a lost crown safe — it can frequently be re-cemented rather than remade. Dental wax or sugar-free gum can shield a sharp edge in the meantime.
Facial swelling or a dental abscess
Same day — and 000 if it spreads. Swelling of the gum, cheek or jaw signals a spreading infection that needs treating at the source, not antibiotics alone. If it reaches your eye or neck, or makes breathing or swallowing difficult, treat it as a medical emergency and call 000 or go to hospital.
Bleeding or a knock to the mouth
Prompt care — check for injury first. A loosened, pushed-in or bleeding tooth after a fall or sports knock can often be saved if seen quickly. Press clean gauze firmly on the area for 10–15 minutes to control bleeding. If there’s a head knock, a deep cut, or bleeding that won’t stop, get medical help first.
What to do before you reach us
Simple, sensible first aid while you’re on your way — none of it replaces being seen, but it can make a real difference to the outcome.
-
1Knocked-out adult tooth
Handle it by the crown, not the root
Pick it up by the white part. If it’s dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or your own saliva — not tap water, and don’t scrub it. If you can, gently place it back in the socket and bite on a clean cloth; if you can’t, keep it in a cup of milk. Then call us and come straight in — the first hour matters most.
-
2Toothache
Rinse, floss gently, relieve the pain
Rinse with warm salty water and floss carefully either side of the tooth in case something is trapped. Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the packet. Hold a cold compress against your cheek — never put aspirin or heat directly on the tooth or gum.
-
3Broken or chipped tooth
Keep the piece and protect the tongue
Save any fragment in milk or water and bring it with you. Rinse your mouth with warm water, use a cold compress for swelling, and if a sharp edge is cutting your tongue or cheek, a little orthodontic wax or sugar-free gum over it helps until we see you.
-
4Swelling or abscess
Call promptly — and watch for warning signs
Rinse gently with warm salty water and call us the same day. If the swelling is spreading towards your eye or down your neck, or you’re finding it hard to breathe or swallow, don’t wait — call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department.
What an emergency visit costs
An emergency appointment starts with an examination — often an X-ray — to find out exactly what’s wrong. Once we know that, we’ll explain your options and give you the price before we treat anything. No one likes an open-ended bill, least of all when they’re already sore.
Claim on the spot
We’re a HICAPS practice, so you claim any private health rebate on your emergency visit right at the desk and pay only the gap.
Pain relief first, plan second
The priority is getting you comfortable. Any larger work to fully restore the tooth can be planned — and quoted — once the emergency is settled.
Interest-free options
If the tooth needs more than a quick fix, ask about spreading the cost with an interest-free payment plan.
What to expect at your visit
Four steps, in order — so even on a stressful day you know what happens next.
-
1Step one
We settle the pain
The first job is to make you comfortable — numbing the area if needed so we can look properly without hurting you.
-
2Step two
We find the cause
A focused examination and usually an X-ray to see what’s really going on beneath the surface, not just the symptom.
-
3Step three
Your options and the price
We explain what needs doing, what it will cost, and what happens if you wait — then you decide. Nothing proceeds without your say-so.
-
4Step four
Treat or stabilise, then plan
We deal with the emergency there and then where we can. If it needs bigger work, we make the tooth safe and book you back to finish it properly.
Questions
Emergency dentist FAQs
Do you see dental emergencies on the same day?
Wherever we possibly can, yes. We hold time aside in the book each day specifically for emergencies, so a painful or broken tooth doesn’t have to wait. Call us as early as you can — the earlier you ring, the easier it is to fit you in that day.
My tooth has been knocked out — what should I do right now?
For an adult tooth, act fast. Pick it up by the crown (never the root), and if it’s dirty rinse it briefly in milk or saliva — not tap water. If you can, gently put it back in the socket and bite on a clean cloth; otherwise keep it in a cup of milk. Then call us immediately and come straight in. The first hour gives the best chance of saving it. A knocked-out baby tooth should not be put back — just call us.
What are your opening hours for emergencies?
We’re open Monday to Friday 9:00am – 6:00pm and Saturday 9:00am – 4:00pm, closed Sunday. We keep emergency slots across those hours — call and we’ll get you in. Outside Allura Dental’s Truganina opening hours, leave a message and we’ll call back when we reopen. For urgent advice, call NURSE-ON-CALL on 1300 60 60 24 (24 hours). For spreading facial swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, or a serious injury, call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department.
How much does an emergency appointment cost?
An emergency visit begins with an examination, often with an X-ray, to diagnose the problem. Once we know what’s needed we give you the price before treating anything — you’re never committed to a cost you haven’t agreed. We’re a HICAPS practice so you can claim any health-fund rebate on the spot, and interest-free plans are available for larger work. See our cost page for how fees work.
Can I take my child to you for a dental emergency?
Yes — we see children as well as adults for emergencies, and we’re gentle with nervous little ones. Eligible children can also be treated under Medicare’s Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS). If your child has knocked out a baby tooth, don’t try to put it back in — just call us and we’ll advise.
Should I go to the hospital or to a dentist?
For the tooth itself — pain, breakage, a lost filling or crown, a dental abscess — a dentist is the right place, and we’re set up to treat it. Go to a hospital emergency department (or call 000) if the swelling is spreading to your eye or neck, you’re struggling to breathe or swallow, or the dental problem is part of a larger facial injury or heavy bleeding. If you’re unsure, call us and we’ll help you judge it.
Will you just pull the tooth out?
Only if it’s genuinely the best option for you — and never without explaining why first. Our aim is to save teeth where we sensibly can. Often an emergency can be settled by treating an infection, dressing a nerve or re-cementing a crown, with the tooth kept. If removal really is the right call, we’ll talk you through it and your options for replacing the tooth.
