Check-ups & cleaning

A regular check-up and clean is the least glamorous and most valuable thing we do — it catches small problems while they’re still small and inexpensive to fix. Most of the expensive dentistry we see could have started as a quiet five-minute conversation.

Families across Truganina, Mt Atkinson, Tarneit, Williams Landing and the rest of Melbourne’s west choose us for their check-ups and cleaning.

Eucalyptus specimen

Eucalyptus — evergreen and ever-fresh; the constancy a check-up protects.

Two parts to a visit

A routine visit is an examination and a clean — the check that finds anything developing, and the clean that keeps it from developing in the first place.

The examination

A careful look over your teeth, gums and bite, plus an oral-cancer and soft-tissue check, with X-rays only where they’re genuinely needed. You’ll see anything of note on your own intraoral photos.

The scale & clean

Professional removal of the hardened plaque (tartar) that brushing can’t shift, then a polish. At Allura Dental in Truganina, a check-up and clean works alongside your daily brushing and flossing to help keep gums healthy.

No upselling: if everything’s healthy, we’ll tell you it’s healthy and send you on your way. A check-up that finds nothing is a good check-up, not a wasted one.

What we’re actually checking for

A check-up is far more than “any holes?”. In a few minutes we’re looking for the things that are least expensive to fix when caught early:

Decay between teeth

The cavities you can’t see or feel yet — caught early, they’re a small filling rather than a root canal later.

Gum health

Early gum disease is silent and reversible; we measure and monitor it before it costs you teeth.

Oral-cancer screening

A quick, gentle check of the soft tissues — the kind of thing that matters precisely because you’d never spot it yourself.

How often you should come back isn’t one-size-fits-all — we set a recall interval based on your own risk, rather than defaulting everyone to six months.

What to expect

A check-up and clean is usually a single, straightforward appointment.

  1. 1Step one

    Examination

We check your teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues, and take X-rays only if there’s a reason to.

  2. 2Step two

    Show you what we see

Anything worth noting, you see on your own photos or scan — decisions are made from pictures, not a description.

  3. 3Step three

    Scale & clean

We remove tartar, clean below the gumline where needed, and polish — leaving your teeth feeling genuinely clean.

  4. 4Step four

    Plan & recall

If anything needs doing, you get it in writing with a price. If not, we agree when you’re next due.

What it costs

A check-up and clean is one of our most straightforward fees, and it’s on the price list rather than a mystery. Most health funds cover preventive visits well, and eligible children are bulk-billed under CDBS with no gap to pay.

Health fund rebates

All major Australian funds accepted and claimed on the spot through HICAPS — you settle only the gap.

Interest-free options

Larger treatment can be spread over time rather than paid upfront — just ask.

No surprise additions

Your quote covers the plan agreed. If something changes clinically, we discuss it before it affects the cost.

Questions

Check-ups & Cleaning FAQs

How often should I have a check-up?

For many people every six months works, but it isn’t a rule — someone with healthy teeth and low risk may safely go longer, while someone prone to decay or gum problems benefits from coming more often. We set your recall based on your own mouth, not a default.

Does a scale and clean hurt?

For most people it’s comfortable — a bit of scraping and water. If your gums are inflamed it can be tender, which is usually a sign they need the clean; we go gently and can numb the area if needed.

Do I really need X-rays?

Only when there’s a reason. X-rays show decay between teeth and problems below the gum that an eye can’t see, but we take them based on your risk and history, not automatically, and keep exposure as low as reasonably possible.

My gums bleed when I brush — is that normal?

No — bleeding gums are the earliest sign of gum disease, which is silent and reversible if caught now. It’s one of the main things a check-up and clean addresses, so it’s worth booking rather than ignoring.

Is a check-up covered by my health fund?

Preventive visits are the best-covered part of most extras policies, and we claim on the spot through HICAPS so you settle only any gap. Eligible children can be bulk-billed under Medicare’s CDBS. Eligible nib Extras members with dental cover can have nib No Gap check-ups at Allura Dental in Truganina, for nib’s set list of items where clinically needed, subject to waiting periods and limits.
